Although Tanzania is not as well known for coffee cultivation as its neighbours Ethiopia and Uganda, it is in fact the fourth largest coffee producer in Africa. Since the 19th century, coffee has been one of Tanzania's most important exports. Coffee is grown mainly in the north of the country, on the slopes of the picturesque Mount Kilimanjaro, and in the south, where areas such as Mbeya, Mbinga and Mbozi are located.

This coffee comes from the Edelweiss Estate, which is located on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is surrounded by indigenous forests. The farm was established by German settlers around 1900, taken over by the British administration after the Second World War and bought by Mr BN Vohora in 1969. As the farm is located in a very remote area in northern Tanzania, the Vohora family is trying to work with the local community. They run various projects to promote sustainable development and protect the natural environment. They provide apprenticeships on the farm, support local schools and have set up a nursery for the children of their employees. In addition, the farm shares one border area with the Ngorongoro Protected Area. As a result, elephants and buffalo regularly pass through the coffee plantation and pose a challenge to the farm and the coffee trees.
